I have been a regular practitioner of #yoga for over 25 years. What started out as a complement to my aerobics classes has, over the years, transformed into its own practice of deep breathing that I use off the mat, and of not only physical expansion and flexibility, but emotional, mental and spiritual expansion as well.
The rigid parts have softened. The inflexible ones have yielded. And with each deepening breath, I feel as if I’m bringing renewed Life – Spirit – into the very core of my being.
I practice alone, at home, following a yoga channel I like. There are certain poses that I find challenging, especially those around the hips and low back. Frog Pose is one of them.
I had just finished some deep stretching, and prepared to move into that pose. I positioned my knees and my feet, and dropped my chest to a level that felt comfortable. Usually, it’s not very low, and my ankles don’t reach the ground.
As my breath deepened that day, I felt my hips open up, and my chest drop. My ankles reached the floor. I was momentarily surprised, and so happy at what I thought was progress in my practice. My breath began to deepen, naturally. And as I breathed in appreciation and gratitude for this unexpected opening, I began to cry.
The cries became uncontrollable sobs that wracked my entire body, and caused even more release; which made me sob even harder! LOL
I had no idea what I was crying about, but the tears continued even as I moved on to the final rest pose, where they eventually subsided.
In that place of stillness and calm, I spoke with my heart.
I understood that the iron cage of hardness that I had placed around my core, my Power centre, had opened. I don’t know why, but I had kept that Power firmly locked, fearing that I would either misuse it or wield it without wisdom or compassion.
“It’s not yours to use,” I felt whispered. “It’s being called by the Heart, by Love, by God in you… to arise. It has a role to play, and its time has come. Yours is to allow it to rise to its fullness, so that God Love in the Heart may use it.
God knows how to use this Power as a force for good. Not you.
It is Love that calls this Power forth. Love is the key that liberates the power of creation that lies in your core. It knows how to use it. You just keep your focus on expanding Love in your Heart.
Power is an important aspect of your Being, and is now ready to be integrated in service to the Divine. It is a blessed thing.”
When I finally stood, I felt both solid on the earth and light as a feather, as if my whole body was being lifted. Tingling went down to my toes. I’ve never felt tingling in my toes! LOL I felt physically taller, and marveled at how I was now eye-level with some of the paintings hanging on the wall.
The sensation lasted for hours, and eventually subsided. The opening in my hips, however, has remained.
I have reflected often on this experience, and its teaching. I have read a great deal on kundalini energy and chakras. What I have come to appreciate is that, yes, we can use techniques to awaken different centres in the body; but these centres are sacred. They have a holy purpose. And their purpose is fully unlocked and used to their full potential when Love is entrenched in the Heart.
Love calls upon each centre to awaken – each in its due course and time – in the way that best serves the soul’s spiritual journey. How that happens for each of us is a grand mystery.
I’m not always the most patient of people. I want my spiritual awakening now, please! I want all my chakras activated now, and my transcendental experiences now!
But I’ve come to appreciate the wisdom of the Heart. To allow, rather than to force. To flow, rather than control. To expand Love, with all its unknowns and mysteries, in my life.
