Orthodox Easter and Cracking Eggs

To my Greek Orthodox family, and all those celebrating Easter today:

المسيح قام! حقا قام!
Christ is Risen. Indeed He is Risen.
Khristós Anésti! Alithós Anésti!

This is called the Paschal Greeting.

One of the greatest traditions on this day - and one of my fondest childhood memories - is a game we used to play, where we would crack each others' boiled eggs.

I only recently understood the meaning of this game:

To many Christians, especially among the Greek and Eastern Orthodox, the egg symbolizes the resurrection. It contains life. During Easter, it is dyed red to symbolize the shed blood. When we crack the shell, we are cracking open the tomb and acknowledging renewed life.

The person who cracks the most eggs with their one egg is believed to be blessed with good fortune for the rest of the year.

These eggs were boiled in onion skin by my uber-talented stepmom who also somehow got these other designs on them! Don't ask me how... LOL

No matter how you celebrate, may the many blessings of this day be showered upon you. 💖🙏
